Eels - Linking the Avon to the Sargasso Sea

A Nature Chain Talk by Geoff Carss

Wednesday, 4 June 2025, 7.30pm

Limpley Stoke Village Hall

Geoff has had a lifelong passion for nature and runs Wilder Sensing - a nature technology company that uses sound and AI to measure change in biodiversity. Outside work Geoff was a bird ringer and a former Trustee of Bristol Avon Rivers Trust.  He is a founder of the Somerset Eel Recovery Project, which he will explore in the talk.

Geoff will tell us about eels and the work of the Somerset Eel Recovery Project, which is taking up the challenge of helping this critically endangered species overcome barriers to migration in the local waterways. The project aims to make practical improvements for the local eel population, such as introducing a range of low-cost measures to help elvers on their way into Somerset's streams and rivers, e.g. hand-crafted straw ropes to drape over some of the larger hydroelectric dams and restocking, where eels are physically moved past barriers and upstream.  The project also works with schools to provide education on eels and their lifecycle, as well as involving the children in releasing young eels into the Somerset waterways.

Bristol and Avon Rivers Trust (BART) is undertaking similar activities and Geoff, a former Trustee, will tell us about releasing elvers (young eels) into the brooks which feed into the Avon nearby, at Dundas.

Geoff will also briefly touch on his work leading Wilder Sensing to give us an appreciation of how sound recording can monitor birds and other wildlife to give valuable population data for conservation.

Entrance is FREE.  Donations on the night are welcome.

Doors open at 7pm and there will be a small bar (card payments available) with proceeds going to the Village Hall.  Parking is available in the car park of the old Rose and Crown at the junction of Middle Stoke and the A36.

We hope to see you there!

Lucy Poloniecka Open Studio

Sunday 15 June 2025
10.30am - 4.00pm

Lucy is a mixed media and textile artist. Her garden studio on stilts stands by, and sometimes in, the Wild River Avon. This is a chance to view some of Lucy’s recent work, much of it inspired by our river and local environment. Denise Barnes will also be exhibiting her ceramics and watercolours.

As well as wall art, there will be an opportunity to buy hand-dyed scarves, and cards but there is no obligation to buy – you will be welcome just to come and be enchanted by the river.

Access to the garden is step-free and there will be some work displayed at ground level although there are steps up to the studio. The venue is on a riverbank, and it is important that parents supervise their children at all times.

For details about visiting the studio please email Lucy at LucyOpenStudio@gmail.com
